Install Android 4.2.2 Stock Firmware for the Samsung Galaxy S4

The UBUAMDG firmware update has been made available via Samsung KIES and as an OTA Update. However, this tutorial is destined to be used by those users who didn’t receive the notification and for those who rooted their phones and cannot get access to such new firmware versions. This guide will work for users who know how to use ODIN and how to flash a stock firmware for their Galaxy S4 phone.
  • use this guide only with the Samsung Galaxy S4 model number I9500, this is the Exynos 5 Octa variant. Don’t try to flash this update for any other Android smartphone.
  • make sure that your computer has the Samsung USB Drivers installed on your device.
  • after completing this tutorial you will lose root access, that is only if you have rooted your device until now. If you already run a stock original firmware then this ‘rooting’ fact doesn’t affect you.
  • enable USB debugging option from the Developer Options menu. If you cannot find this section on your phone, then it is most probably hidden and you have to un-hide it by opening the Settings, then About Phone and after that tap 7 times on the Build Number section. This will re-enable Developer Options.
  • disable the Samsung KIES from running on your PC.
  • disable all antivirus applications that are currently operating on your PC. Such apps are usually interfering with ODIN program, that’s the tool you’re going to use in order to flash the UBUAMDG Jelly Bean 4.2.2 firmware update.
  • make sure that the phone’s battery has enough power left before switching off, as you wouldn’t want for your smartphone to power off in the middle of the installation process.
  • backup your most important data before starting the update.
  • if the Galaxy S4 phone doesn’t boot after flashing the UBUAMDG firmware, then you will be forced to boot into Recovery mode and apply a ‘factory reset’. Such process will wipe the contents from your internal SDcard.
  • this is a guide for advanced Android users, don’t try to flash the new firmware ROM if you don’t know what you’re doing.
  • ask for any extra help in comments in case you cannot complete the update.
  • note that we cannot be blamed in case you brick your smartphone or you lose any important data in the process.
NOTE: remember that root access will be revoked by the installation, which means that in case you wish to re-root your device, then you should take a look at our Galaxy S4 Root section here to find a working guide. However, try and look for a tutorial that works with UBUAMDG firmware version.

How to update Galaxy S4 Exynos 5 Octa to Android 4.2.2 UBUAMDG firmware:

  1. Download the I9500UBUAMDG firmware zip file from HERE. Save the file on your PC.
  2. Extract the contents and place the .tar.md5 file into single folder that’s saved on your computer’s desktop.
  3. Download ODIN 3.07 from HERE. Extract its contents after the download is complete.
  4. Power off your smartphone completely. This means that you should wait for the vibration, as that will confirm that the device has been completely switched off.
  5. Boot your phone into Download Mode. It can be done by pressing and holding at the same time Volume Down, Home and Power buttons. Confirm Download Mode by pressing Volume Up when the screen shows the Warning message.
  6. Now, launch ODIN 3.07 executable file.
  7. Connect the Galaxy S4 to your PC via USB Cable. ODIN will now say ‘Added!!’ and you can continue to the next step.
  8. > NOTE: if ODIN doesn’t recognize the phone, then you can try to switch between USB ports or reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.
  9. Click the ‘PDA’ button in ODIN.
  10. Browse your PC and load the I9500UBUAMDG firmware .tar.md5 file. Don’t change any other Odin default settings, just make sure that the ‘Re-Partition’ option is disabled.
  11. Click the START button when you’re ready for the updating process to begin.
  12. When the new OS is installed with success, you’ll notice that the Galaxy S4 has restarted. ODIN will say ‘PASS’ and you can unplug the phone from PC. Wait for the first boot process to complete, it shouldn’t take more than 7 minutes to complete.
  13. When the phone boots into normal mode, you can check the About Phone menu to see that the UBUAMDG Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean firmware is listed as default Android build number and version.
NOTE: if ODIN freezes or it shows the ‘FAIL’ message, then the update wasn’t installed. You need to disconnect the phone from PC, remove its battery, close ODIN, re-insert the battery back into its place after 5 seconds and then repeat the entire tutorial starting with step 5. The new OS should install at your second attempt.
  • power off the device completely.
  • boot it into Recovery Mode.
  • select ‘wipe data/ factory reset’. Confirm.
  • get back to the main Recovery menu.
  • select ‘reboot system now’.
  • wait until the phone boots into normal mode.
These were all the steps that you had to take in order to flash the latest Android 4.2.2 UBUAMDG firmware version for your Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 phone. For any extra questions, use the comments section below.
